Friday Night Lights: Central Catholic opens MHC with a win, PIL taking shape
League play has officially begun for all local teams as Central Catholic, David Douglas and Parkrose all faced local foes in Week Five.
Meanwhile in the PIL, the cream is starting to rise to the top in the nine-team league as Ida B. Wells, Lincoln and Grant all won. Plus, Franklin went on the road to Salem and picked up its fourth win of the season.

Grant 50, Cleveland 0
No Deckard Hale, no problem for Grant as it rolled at home in a 50-0 blanking of Cleveland.

Ida B. Wells 35, Jefferson 0
In a special homecoming week game for Wells, the Guardians took care of business in the first half to run away with a 35-0 win over Jefferson.
Wells scored all 35 points in the first half, two of the TDs coming via a pick-six. SeAun Davis and Elliot Mahoney did the honors, meanwhile Davis also scored a rushing TD. Oliver Hamazaoui scored on the ground and Kannon Walter caught a TD from Jude Nolan.
The Guardians remain unbeaten through five weeks at 5-0 and have a 4-0 mark in the PIL. Jefferson drops to 1-4 overall and in the PIL.

Lincoln 41, Roosevelt 8
Lincoln jumped ahead 28-0 at halftime and coasted in the second half to a 41-8 victory over the defending PIL champions in Roosevelt.
Auden Rose was the star of the night with a passing TD to Kai Lindsey, along with two rushing TDs and a kickoff return TD. Antayus Wilkins found the end zone once, as did Leonardo Correani who also had an INT on defense. Devin Prendergast had a sack as well.
Lincoln remains unbeaten in league at 4-0 and is 4-1 overall, meanwhile Roosevelt drops to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in PIL play.

McDaniel 36, Benson 14
It wasn’t the prettiest win for McDaniel, but the Mountain Lions got the job done to earn their first victory of the season in a 35-14 win over Benson.
Yashawn Johnson had a pick-six to highlight the defense while QB Davonne Granville had one rushing TD and one passing TD. Wyatt Finley also passed for a TD, and the two receivers were Marion Walker and Thomas Redeau.
McDaniel is on the board now at 1-4 overall and in the PIL, Benson drops to 0-5 in both.

Franklin 20, McNary 14
Franklin went up early and held on the rest of the way to pick up a 20-14 road win over McNary in the Lightning's lone nonleague matchup of the season.
For the second consecutive week, Jamari Cade scored on defense when he returned an interception for a TD against the Celtics. He also caught a TD pass from Rowan Simar and LaQuante James also found pay dirt on the ground.
On defense, Abraham Heintzman and Malcolm McTaggart each had an interception.
Franklin is now 4-1 overall on the season and remains 3-1 in the PIL.

Central Catholic 42, Clackamas 12
After playing the toughest nonleague slate in the state, Central Catholic opened up Mt. Hood play with a big 42-12 win over Clackamas.
Just one play into the game, Kody Grant hit Kaden Bozovich for a 50-yard TD and the Rams were off to the races.
Summit Grant was next on a 1-yard dive to make it 13-0 Rams, then Armani Tonga went untouched on a 10-yard TD run to make it 20-0 CC after the first.
Tonga scored again early in the second quarter, which was followed by a two-point conversion to put the Rams up 28-0. Grant broke free on the next possession for a 48-yard TD and a 35-0 lead.
Clackamas scored with less than a minute to go in the first half, but the Rams went down the field in 39 seconds, finishing the half with a Kody Grant to Bozovich catch and run. That made it 42-6 at the break and the Rams coasted from there in the second half.
The win is the Rams first of the year, putting them at 1-4 overall, but 1-0 in the MHC.

Gresham 36, David Douglas 8
A tough first half was too much of a hole to dig out from for David Douglas in a 36-8 road loss to Gresham.
The Scots were down 29-0 at the break, but held the Gophers off the scoreboard in the third and got a pick-six early in the fourth by Josiah Banks to inch a little closer. Gresham responded on the ensuing drive with another score to ice the win.
David Douglas falls to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in 5A Special District 1 play.
