Friday Night Lights: Jefferson picks up first win, big wins for PIL top squads
Week three provided some comfortable victories for some teams in the city, and others were left picking up the pieces after Friday night.
Grant, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Jefferson all won league matchups comfortably while Central Catholic, Parkrose and David Douglas all faced tough nonleague opponents.

Lincoln 44, Cleveland 8
Lincoln got back in the win column by rolling through Cleveland at home 44-8 after the score was 44-0 at halftime.
Leonardo Correani, Tyler Moore and Greyson Murff all had interceptions on defense with Murff returning his for a touchdown. Devin Prendergast had three sacks.
On offense, Antayus Wilkins rushed for two TDs, as did Correani, and Murff had a rushing score as well.
The Cardinals improve to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the PIL while the Warriors suffered their first defeat of the season, dropping to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the PIL

Roosevelt 40, McDaniel 14
Marlan McCowan was dealing against his former squad in a 40-14 Roosevelt win over McDaniel, the Roughriders’ first home game of the season.
McCowan, who transferred from McDaniel this summer, had touchdown passes, one each to Jayon Duckett, Naheem Campbell, Cameron Harris and Jesse Brucato. McCowan also rushed for one score and JJ Buell also ran in a score.
The win was needed for Roosevelt after falling to Wells last week, getting the Riders to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the PIL. McDaniel is still looking for its first win of the season sitting at 0-3 and 0-3 in the PIL.

Jefferson 47, Benson 0
Jefferson is in the win column thanks to a 47-0 home win over Benson.
Democrats QB DJ Edwards found a groove in the passing game, throwing for 216 yards and two TDs. Meanwhile on the ground, Elijah Matthews carried the ball three times and he scored on all three touches.
The Demos move up to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the PIL while Benson, back at varsity this season, searches for win No. 1 at 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the PIL.

Grant 48, Franklin 0
Grant jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and bled the clock on the road to take out Franklin 48-0.
The Generals have turned in a winning streak now after taking out Benson last week, improving to 2-1 overall and in the PIL. The loss was Franklin’s first this year, dropping it to 2-1 overall and in the PIL.

Ida B. Wells 58, McMinnville 12
For a second consecutive week, the game was over almost as quickly as it started for Wells in a 58-12 blowout of visiting nonleague foe McMinnville.
The Guardians were up 40-0 with 11 minutes still left in the second quarter, eventually taking a 52-6 lead into halftime.
Ethan Hoover found the end zone a couple times, along with TD runs from Kannon Walter, Lucius Coon, Oliver Hamzaoui and Elliot Mahoney. Toby Carrick came up with an interception on defense and Wyatt Hanifin recovered a fumble.
Wells is now 3-0 on the year and its 2-0 PIL mark remains unmoved.

Reynolds 42, David Douglas 13
David Douglas played a strong first half, but let go of the rope in the second half to fall on the road to Reynolds 42-13.
The Scots trailed 14-13 with only a couple minutes left in the first half when the Raiders were able to tack on one more score to take a 21-13 lead. In the second half, the Scots struggled for the final 24 minutes and fell to 0-3 overall, but are certainly making strides under first year head coach Tyler Maes.

Graham-Kapowsin (WA) 41, Central Catholic 14
Central Catholic knew it had a brutal nonleague slate, and the team from Washington proved it with a dominant 41-14 win Friday at Hillsboro Stadium.
The Eagles took a 27-0 lead into halftime and made it 34-0 with 4.5 minutes left in the third quarter. The Rams were able to get on the board in the fourth when QB Armani Tonga ran in two TDs, one from a yard out and the other from three yards out.
The Rams loss sends them to 0-3 with the other drops coming to West Linn and Lake Oswego.

Hillsboro 41, Parkrose 6
Parkrose was in trouble from the first snap on the road in a 41-6 loss to Hillsboro.
The Broncos got the ball first, but fumbled it away on the first snap of the game and the Spartans scored the next play.
Penalties ultimately killed the Broncos on the night, putting their offense in too many second and third-and-longs. And two more interceptions helped Hillsboro push for a 35-0 lead.
Marcus McCauley sprang some life into the team before halftime though, coming up with a 90-yard pick-six to make it a 35-6 ball game at the break. But Hillsboro got the ball to start the second half and worked down the field for another score to induce the running clock.
Parkrose falls to 0-3 overall and will look to win No. 1 against a struggling Centennial squad next week.
