Friday Night Lights: Parkrose picks up first win, Central Catholic falls late to Jesuit

We’re back putting to bed another week of high school football action in the Rose City where we saw four more PIL matchups and four more nonleague games for the rest.

Central Catholic and Jesuit played one of the most exciting games in the state on Friday night, meanwhile Jefferson gave No. 9 Lincoln everything it could handle.

Parkrose picked up its first win of the season and David Douglas nearly came up with its first as well.

Franklin 44, McDaniel 16

Our game of the week took us to McDaniel where Franklin ran the ball and ran it hard en route to a 44-16 win.

Lincoln 44, Jefferson 20

Jefferson came out and gave No. 9 Lincoln all it could handle, but the Cardinals eventually found their footing and pulled away for the 44-20 win.

Antayus Wilkins continued to light it up on the ground for Lincoln with four more rushing touchdowns, meanwhile Leonardo Correani had one score and so did Auden Rose. Tyler Kim and Grady Wilmot each had a pick and River Whitescarver hit a 35-yard field goal.

For Jefferson, Cash Allen had a scoop and score TD and a kickoff return TD in the first half to keep the Democrats close.

Lincoln improves to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the PIL while Jefferson falls to 1-3 overall and in the PIL.

Roosevelt 47, Benson 6

Benson scored its first touchdown of the season, and its first varsity score since 2018, but Roosevelt still pulled away 47-6 for the win.

Jayon Duckett found the end zone again with a receiving TD, and he also had a fumble returned for another score. TyVelle Hill worked similarly with a rushing TD on offense and a pick-six on defense.

JJ Buell ran in a score while Jesse Brucato and Naheem Campell each caught one TD.

Roosevelt moves up to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the PIL while Benson drops to 0-4 in both.

Wells 46, Cleveland 10

Despite being down nine starters, Ida B. Wells was able to get the job done on the road at Cleveland with a 46-10 win.

Kannon Walter and Yassin Birya both found the end zone to help lead the Guardians on offense and keep them undefeated on the season at 4-0, 3-0 in the PIL.

Cleveland falls to .500 at 2-2 overall and 2-2 in the PIL.

Grant 48, Liberty 26

Grant went out to Hillsboro for its one nonleague game of the season against 5A Liberty, and the Generals got the job done with a 48-26 win.

Deckard Hale scored twice on the ground and had a two-point conversion, meanwhile Jamarea Sanders caught two touchdowns.

That’s three wins in a row now for the Generals who are 3-1 overall, 2-1 in the PIL.

Jesuit 45, Central Catholic 41

An insane fourth quarter in the Holy War matchup ended with homestanding Jesuit on top in a 45-41 win over Central Catholic.

The Rams took a 35-31 lead with 6:17 left in the game, but the Crusaders were able to score quickly and go up 38-35 with 3:24 to go.

Central Catholic moved the ball to midfield where Kody Grant hit Jamear Shambry for the deep TD and pushed the Rams ahead 41-38.

However, another big play down the field for the Jesuit offense set it up inside the 10 of the Rams, and one play later the Crusaders were back in for the score and a 45-41 lead with 1:01 to go.

The Rams couldn’t find an answer, and Jesuit sealed the game with an interception.

Central Catholic falls to 0-4 after playing one of the toughest nonleague slates possible. The Rams start league play next week.

Parkrose 40, Centennial 12

Parkrose is into the win column, going on the road to take out Centennial 40-12.

Basketball star Keone Gates came out for football this season, and in his first game of the season he scored twice on the ground. Jordan Smith caught a TD and Colonel Mubikayi had a kickoff return TD to help the Broncos pull ahead.

Parkrose is now 1-3 overall ahead of league play starting next week.

Putnam 20, David Douglas 14

David Douglas took a 14-6 lead in the third quarter on homecoming night, but couldn’t hold on to the lead the rest of the second half in a 20-14 loss to Putnam.

The Scots fall to 0-4 on the season and begin league play next week.
