In week eight of the high school football season, league titles were up for grabs and playoff spots were starting to come to light.

For Central Catholic, a tough defeat likely ends its shot at another Mt. Hood crown, meanwhile Roosevelt won to secure its first outright PIL title at the highest classification since 1995.

There were other big wins and losses around the city on the penultimate night of the football season. Check them all out down below!

Roosevelt 28, McDaniel 7

Roosevelt secured the PIL title with a 28-7 victory over McDaniel on the road. At 5-0 in league play with a win over Lincoln at 5-1, the Roughriders will still win the crown even with a loss next week as they own the head-to-head win over the Cardinals.

The league crown is the Riders first outright title at the highest classification since 1995. Roosevelt won the crown in 2013 when a majority of the PIL was at 5A, and also tied in record for the PIL title in 2021 and 2022 but lost it officially on tiebreakers to Grant both times. The Riders shared the crown in 2018 with Lincoln and Grant at 6A.

As for the game with the Mountain Lions, Geovoney Burks did damage once again on the ground with three rushing TDs while QB Ezra Arp added the fourth score on a rushing TD.

The Riders improve to 5-3 overall and 5-0 in the PIL while the Mountain Lions drop to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Roosevelt will look to leave no doubt of a league title in the season finale when it hosts Grant at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30. McDaniel will try to close the season with a win on the road at Frankin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

Nelson 26, Central Catholic 6

Six turnovers helped Nelson turn back Central Catholic and end the Rams’ 39-game win streak in the Mt. Hood Conference.

Ida B. Wells 46, Canby 38

Ida B. Wells survived a wild finish to take down Canby 46-38 at home thanks to a score with 20 seconds left on the clock.

The Guardians went up 22-10 at halftime thanks to an 88-yard Kannon Walter rushing TD, a Kurt Jordan rushing TD and a Roman Tubay score.

The two sides traded scores again to make it 30-17 in the fourth before the Cougars stormed back to tie it at 30 with 2:07 left in the third.

Wells found the end zone again on a Lucious Coon score with 8:43 left in the game, and Jude Nolan picked up the two-point try to make it 38-30 Guardians.

Canby came back in three minutes though and picked up the two-pointer, tying it at 38.

But with 20 seconds on the clock, Nolan ran in his second rushing TD of the night and converted on the same play for the two-pointer to provide the 46-38 final.

Wells improves to 4-4 overall and stays at 3-2 in the PIL following the nonleague matchup. The Guardians close the season on the road next week at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 against Jefferson.

Lincoln 29, Jefferson 0

Lincoln’s defense slowed down the Jefferson offense and got what it needed on offense to stay in second place in the PIL.

Zan Galton ran in two TDs while Leonardo Correani scored once on the ground. Finn Davies hit Blake Timothy to round out the touchdowns for the Cardinals.

It was a tough week for Lincoln as it had to forfeit its Sept. 12 win over Reynolds. The OSAA website lists an “ineligible participant” as the cause for the forfeit.

The forfeit plus the Jefferson win combine for a 6-2 overall record for Lincoln, and a final 5-1 mark in the PIL. The Democrats fall to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the PIL. Jefferson ends the season next week when it hosts Wells at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

Lincoln’s final regular season game is on the road where it will take on Cleveland at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

Grant 21, Franklin 14

Grant and Franklin played another classic at the Marshall Campus, and the Generals came out on top at the end.

Down seven on the Generals 3-yard line with about a minute left, the Lightning looked likely to tie the game up. However, a goal line stand by the Generals kept Franklin out of the end zone and preserved the 21-14 victory.

Grant moves to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the PIL, Franklin drops to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in the PIL.

Up next, Franklin hosts McDaniel in the season finale set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30. Grant will take on PIL champion Roosevelt on the road at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

Parkrose 54, Putnam 7

Parkrose put the hurt on the road at Putnam to secure a winning season, the Broncos first since a 7-3 mark in 2019.

Scores came from everywhere, starting with Corinthian Littleton receiving a TD and returning a punt for a score. Tranden Stricker threw two TDs, rushing for another and had a pick-six on defense. Kavion Combs helped the scoring as well with a rushing TD.

The Broncos are now 5-3 overall and 3-3 in 5A Special District 1 play. They’ll finish up the season out east when they take on Hood River Valley on the road at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.
