Friday Night Lights: Grant football picks up first win; Parkrose back in the win column

Week Five is in the books and we’re officially already more than halfway through the high school football season.

The PIL race is starting to take shape with Roosevelt taking the outright lead. But troubles still lurk with Grant picking up win No. 1 and McDaniel on a win streak.

Central Catholic opened up Mt. Hood play with a big win, meanwhile Parkrose got back into the Special District 1 race with a shutout.

All that and more in the Friday Night Lights roundup down below!

Roosevelt 18, Lincoln 14

Down 14-0 at halftime, Roosevelt came out looking like a different team in the second half to pull off the comeback and take the outright lead in the PIL.

Grant 34, Jefferson 0

Grant picked up its first win of the season in a big way with the shutout of Northeast rival Jefferson 34-0.

Leading the defensive push was sophomore RJ Jeter, who came up with three interceptions on the night. Meanwhile on offense, sophomore QB Gage Creasey was the main point of attack with three rushing touchdowns.

The win moves Grant to 1-4 on the year overall and 1-1 in the PIL. Jefferson falls to 1-4 and 1-2 in league play.

Up next for Grant is a tough test on the road against defending PIL champs Ida B. Wells with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9. Jefferson will try to bounce back against another rival in Roosevelt, gametime is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 at Jefferson.

Ida B. Wells 58, Franklin 34

Franklin was able to keep pace, but an early 30-0 hole was too much as Ida B. Wells got back in the win column 58-34.

The Guardians went up big thanks to two rushing touchdowns from Fletcher Hamman in the first quarter, followed by a Jude Nolan to Kannon Walter pass for another score to make it 24-0 after one.

Roman Tubay scored his first of two touchdowns in the second to make it 30-0 before the Lightning finally got a response on a Jamari Cade rushing TD.

The two sides went back and forth from there with Kurt Jordan scoring two rushing TDs for Wells while Franklin QB Silas Combs hit Rashawn Hunter-Barber for a couple passing TDs.

Walter would add another rushing TD to get to the 58 mark, while the other Lightning scores came from a Combs to Remy Sharp-Hawk pass and a Combs to Evan Roseborough TD pass at the buzzer.

Wells improves to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the PIL standings while Franklin falls to 1-4 and 0-3. The Lightning will look to rebound against Southeast rival Cleveland at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 while the Guardians hope to start a win streak at home against Grant at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9.

McDaniel 41, Cleveland 19

Make that two wins in a row for McDaniel after taking care of business in the win over Cleveland.

Jaydin Jordan continues to be a machine for the Mountain Lions, catching two more TD passes on the night. And his fellow senior speedster in Tre’Marion Crawford had one receiving and one rushing TD on the night. QB Marlan McCowan finished with four TDs, three passing and one rushing. Jesse Jones added a rushing TD as well.

McDaniel is now 2-3 on the season, but remains 1-1 in the PIL as Cleveland is playing an independent schedule once again this season.

Up next, the Mountain Lions host 4-1 Lincoln starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9. The Warriors (0-5) will try to get win No. 1 next week against Powell Boulevard foe Franklin, that one kicking off at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 at Franklin.

Central Catholic 42, Clackamas 7

Central Catholic opened Mt. Hood Conference play with a dominant performance over Clackamas.

Tyson Davis and KK Sombe ruled the ground game, each of them scoring two rushing TDs on the night. Kody Grant stepped in at QB and tossed two TDs, one to Talon Sosky and the other to Dayvion Curtis.

And of course, senior Cole Thomas pitched in an interception on defense.

The Rams move up to 4-1 on the year and are 1-0 in the MHC. They’ll be back home inside Hillsboro Stadium next week to take on Reynolds with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9.

Parkrose 24, Centennial 0

Parkrose got back into the win column and stopped a two-game skid with the 24-0 road win over Centennial.

Senior Corinthian Littleton was his explosive self with two touchdowns on the night of over 30 yards for the Broncos. Fellow senior Si’yel Bell added a 75-yard kickoff return TD while the defense played lights out against the Eagles.

Parkrose is back above .500 at 3-2 overall and sits at 1-2 in 5A Special District 1 play. The Broncos will look to pick up another win on the road when they play Gresham at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9.
