Six local 6A Portland soccer teams entered the play-in round, and only two survived to begin the week.

The Franklin boys took out Southridge 2-1 at home on Monday and the David Douglas girls went to Sherwood and snagged a 3-1 win to advance to the postseason on Tuesday.

Franklin girls soccer fell at home 1-0 to Beaverton, and the Cleveland girls lost a heartbreaker to Glencoe 3-2 after the match went to penalty kicks and the Crimson Tide won 4-1. Ida B. Wells girls lost on the road 1-0 to Lake Oswego.

The Roosevelt boys went out to Westview for its play-in match and forced overtime, but eventually fell 2-1 to have the Roughriders season come to an end.

Add it all up and there’s officially 12 Portland teams heading to the 6A state soccer tournaments with more to come once 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A/1A boys all freeze their rankings on Saturday, Oct. 31.

State soccer brackets

Starting with the boys, three teams will still be waiting for opponents as they reached the top eight seeds and received a first-round bye.

Cleveland is the highest ranked boys team at No. 2, followed closely behind by PIL champions Lincoln at No. 3. Grant also climbed into the top eight at No. 6.

McDaniel is up next at No. 9 and will host No. 24 Sherwood after the Bowmen upset Tualatin in the play-in on Saturday, Oct. 31. The winner of that match gets No. 8 McMinnville on Nov. 3.

Ida B. Wells checks in at No. 10 and will host in the first round. No. 23 Grants Pass is coming to town Saturday, Oct. 31 and the winner gets No. 7 South Eugene in the second round Nov. 3.

Central Catholic finished at No. 14 and will host No. 19 Mountainside to kick off its postseason run on Saturday, Oct. 31. The winner will be at No. 3 Lincoln in the second round.

Finally, Franklin earned the No. 18 seed after winning its play-in match, and the reward is a long trip south to take on No. 15 South Medford on Saturday, Oct. 31. If the Lightning won, it’d be a much closer trip as No. 2 Cleveland awaits the winner on Nov. 3.

Switching over to the girls, Grant, the PIL champions, are the highest ranked local team as the No. 2 seed, which comes with a first-round bye.

Central Catholic is close behind at No. 3 after winning the Mt. Hood Conference, and Lincoln is No. 5 to round out local teams with byes.

McDaniel finished at No. 15 and will look to avenge the Wells play-in loss against No. 18 Lake Oswego, that match is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31. Grant awaits the winner.

David Douglas is the last local team in for the 6A girls, earning the No. 21 seed after upsetting Sherwood in the play-in. The Scots drew No. 12 West Linn on Saturday, Oct. 31 with the winner getting No. 5 Lincoln on Nov. 3.

More soccer

Parkrose boys soccer looks likely to reach the 5A state tournament sitting at No. 11 in the OSAA. The Broncos could still secure an auto bid depending on tiebreakers with Hood River Valley, who they tied back on Oct. 7.

Portland Adventist Academy boys also appear to be in a good spot despite what looks to be a fourth place finish in 3A Special District 1. The league is stacked, leaving the Cougars in fourth but sitting at No. 9 in 3A where one at-large team gets in.

In the inaugural season of 2A/1A boys soccer, Portland Christian has secured second place in Special District 1 and will head to the postseason.

State volleyball

There are four 6A girls volleyball teams still alive after the play-in round, and three of them are still awaiting opponents after earning byes.

Grant, the PIL champions, are the No. 4 seed, followed by the Mt. Hood Conference champions in Central Catholic at No. 6. Lincoln comes in at No. 7.

So the only local team playing in the 6A first round is No. 11 St. Mary’s Academy. The Blues are hosting No. 22 Sunset at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28.

In small school action, Portland Adventist is back in the playoffs and playing in the second round as the No. 10 seed. The Cougars will be at No. 7 Santiam Christian at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.

In 2A, Portland Christian went undefeated in the Metro East Conference, but a tough nonleague slate knocked the Royals to the No. 13 seed. They’ll host No. 20 East Linn Christian at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 in the first round with the winning drawing No. 4 Crane, a team that won the last three 1A state titles before moving up to 2A this year.

Last but not least in 1A, Columbia Christian snuck into the postseason field as the No. 27 seed in the 28-team bracket, making its first postseason appearance since 2015. The Knights, who finished fourth in the Valley 10, will take on No. 6 Joseph at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28.
