Rose City Roundup: Ellery Lincoln smashes record; More track and field, baseball and softball standouts

Records are being broken, state standings are starting to take shape and the diamond sports in Portland are heating up for league play.

This Rose City Roundup again has some of the best performances from the past week on the diamond, as well as a look at the best marks from the week of track and field.

Track and field performances

The best performance of the week is a familiar face in Lincoln junior Ellery Lincoln after she ran the 3000 in 9 minutes, 6.61 seconds, setting a new state record by over 11 seconds and is the fifth fastest time in U.S. history according to Lincoln track and field.

Lincoln did it on her home track in a dual meet against rival Ida B. Wells, breaking the mark on April 8. Did you catch that she’s just a junior too?

There were performances from regular meets during the week, but the next standout comes from Roosevelt senior Aster Jones who competed at the Arcadia Invitational in California where she ran a wind-aided 11.31 100 meter. That put her in second against some of the country’s best.

Jones also ran in the 200 where she also took second, running a 23.47.

Wells freshman Zora Li Budd Baker ran the 400 earlier in the week to a time of 57.57 in a dual meet with Lincoln, the fourth fastest time in the event in 6A this season.

David Douglas junior Ariya Abdullah is now atop the girls 300 hurdles standings after running a 45.30 at the Wilsonville Invitational on April 11.

Abdullah’s teammate in sophomore Beatrice Dormezil competed in the girls discus and had a top throw of 117 feet, 4 inches, the new second best mark in 6A this season.

Lincoln senior Cameron Mirzakhalili had the second-best 6A throw of the season in the boys discus earlier in the week in a dual meet with Wells, reaching 165-6.

Cleveland senior Noah Malmon continued his stellar 2026 by leaping to the front of the 6A standings in the boys triple jump. He reached 45-6.5 in the Wilsonville Invitational on April 11.

Parkrose junior Mekhi Kent has the fourth-best leap in the 5A triple jump this season, reaching 42-9 on April 8.

Riverdale junior is now the 3A leader in boys discus after throwing a 152-11 in the Catlin Gabel Meet on April 8.

Portland Christian senior Andrew Kempenich began his final season and already has the fourth-fastest time in the 2A boys 400 at 52.54 seconds, which he ran at the Catlin Gabel Meet.

Columbia Christian senior Jasper Zapp got it going on the track, running the boys 100 in a time of 11.27 for the third best time in 2A this season at the Wilsonville Invitational on April 11. He also ran the 200 in 23.11 for the fourth-best time in 2A, and anchored the 4x100 relay team that finished in 44.16, the second best in 2A for 2026 so far.

Defending champion Mili Estrada, a Portland Christian senior, ran a top-2A time of 16.60 in the girls 100 hurdles at the Catlin Gabel Meet. She also helped the Royals move to fourth in the 4x100 relay with a time of 53.12 at the same meet.

Baseball performances

Cleveland senior Arlo Copony went 8 for 12 this week in three games, along with knocking his first home run of the season against La Salle Prep on April 9. Copony is hitting .575 this season (23 for 40) with an unreal 1.510 OPS.

Grant senior Elliot Raiton went 7 for 8 with four runs scored and two RBI in two games this week, a 10-6 loss to Barlow and a 5-4 win at Wilsonville. Raiton is hitting .447 (17 for 38) with a 1.307 OPS, two home runs and eight RBI.

Franklin senior Silas Combs went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI in the Lightning’s first win of the season, taking down David Douglas 12-2 on April 6.

Lincoln junior Grady Wilmot had two triples this week, including one in an 11-4 win over Oregon City on April 8 where he also drove in five runs.

McDaniel exploded for 25 runs in a 25-1 win over Springfield on April 7, led by senior Riley Flynn going 3 for 5 with three RBI. He added another hit and two more RBI in a 6-5 win over Hillsboro on April 8.

Central Catholic had a wild week, which included a walk-off single from freshman Jacksen Dunn to take down Lake Oswego 7-6 on April 9. The Rams opened Mt. Hood Conference play the next day with a 3-0 win over Gresham where sophomore Sam Smith pitched a complete-game shutout with only one hit allowed and 12 strikeouts.

Portland Christian senior Noah Humphrey pitched a complete game in a 4-1 win over Blanchet Catholic on April 10. The senior only gave up one run and had six strikeouts.

Softball performances

Central Catholic junior Portland Razo continues to dominate, including a 3 for 3 performance with three runs scored in a 7-6 win over Southridge on April 8. She was also 3 for 4 in a 4-3 loss to Tigard on April 6 and is hitting .655 (19 for 29) this season with a 1.643 OPS.

Everyone on Cleveland had a strong week essentially, but senior Kailen Steffek led the way by swatting three home runs, two against Franklin in a 14-4 win on April 10. She went a perfect 5 for 5 on the week with seven RBI and is currently hitting .656 (21 for 32) with six HRs, a 2.127 OPS and 20 RBI.

Grant junior Hazel Heron had a stellar week in the circle, throwing 14 innings across two wins over McDaniel (2-1 April 7) and Wells (1-0 April 10). She had a total of 23 strikeouts between the two games and gave up only nine hits with one run and one walk.

Wells senior Zoe Wise had a strong week, starting with a 3 for 5 day with five RBI in a 10-8 win over Roosevelt on April 8. She followed it up with a 2 for 3 day against Grant in a 1-0 loss on April 10. She’s batting .484 on the season (15 for 31) with 18 RBI and a 1.203 OPS.

McDaniel’s Amira Edwards hit her second home run of the season in a 14-3 win over Roosevelt on April 10 and also pitched all five innings where she had only one earned run with four hits allowed and 11 strikeouts.

Roosevelt sophomore Penelope Thurston had three doubles this week to help the Roughriders go 1-2 on the week. She’s their leader hitter so far this season with a .360 average and a 1.023 OPS plus four RBI.

Need for Speed standouts

The annual Need for Speed Invitational was held at Sherwood on April 11 and plenty of locals left their mark at one of the season’s biggest meets.

Central Catholic senior Joseph Donnelly leapt to the top of the 6A 100 meter standings with a time of 10.52, .04 off his PR time of 10.48 that is tied for the fifth fastest mark in state history.

The boys long jump was a battle with Donnelly edging out the reigning state champion in Jefferson senior EJ Cozart. Donnelly went 23-11.75, a new meet record, while Cozart went 23-8.75 for his top jump. Cozart still has the top 6A leap this year at 24-3.75 while Donnelly’s winning jump is now second best.

Jefferson senior Q Gresham won the boys triple jump with a top leap of 45-3.5, which puts him second in 6A this season.

Central Catholic junior Jordan Dillard won the boys 300 hurdles in a PR time of 39.57, the third best time in 6A this season. He also ran the 110 hurdles where he took third in a time of 15.08.

Wells senior Tyler Marshall is thawing out and posted his season-best time of 14.98 in the boys 110 hurdles, winning the event. That time currently sits No. 4 in 6A this season.

Grant junior Carly Jendritza won the girls high jump by clearing 5-4.

The Grant girls won the 4x200 relay race in a time of 1.48.52, run by Tess Ipsen, Soriah Vandenhooff, Amelie Lindsey and Riley Dotten.

Lincoln junior Peter James set a new PR in the boys 3000 with a time of 8:22.95, putting him in second in 6A this year in the event.

Grant senior Willa Stockton kept cutting time, this time she ran the 100 in 12.01 seconds for a new PR as she took second at Need for Speed. Her new time is the second best in 6A this season.

Lincoln junior Kelsey Hill finished second in the girls 100 hurdles with a PR time of 15.35, the third best mark in 6A this season. She also ran the 300 hurdles in a PR time of 45.48, also placing her in second and also putting her second in 6A this season.

Wells freshman Zora Li Budd Baker continues to fly, taking fourth in the girls 800 with a time of 2:16.44, the sixth best time in 6A in 2026 so far.

Central Catholic took second in the boys 4x100 relay with a time of 42.24, run by Tayton Promma-Harris, Asa Lundberg, Dayvion Curtis and Joseph Donnelly. That mark is the third best in 6A so far this season.

Lincoln senior Cameron Mirzakhalili and junior Greyson Murff went second and third in the boys discus with throws of 158-10 and 158-7, respectively. Mirzakhalili had the second-best 6A throw of the season earlier in the week in a dual meet with Wells, reaching 165-6.
