It’s the busiest time of the year for high school sports with the plethora of spring athletics all coming to a close with the end of the school year near.

This week, state golf went down Monday and Tuesday while league crowns were decided for the diamond sports. And then this weekend, state tennis rolls on alongside state boys volleyball and track and field district meets to determine state spots.

And for good measure, Grant sent its girls lacrosse team to the state championship game, played Thursday at Lakeridge High School.

We’ve got it all rounded up for you in a special weekday Rose City Roundup with plenty more coverage coming this weekend.

Grant girls lacrosse takes home second

For the second consecutive year, Grant girls lacrosse finished its season playing for a state title, and for a second time the Generals were up against Jesuit at Lakeridge High School.

The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead and kept Grant at bay for nearly the full 48 minutes, taking the 11-9 victory and leaving the Generals with silver once more.

Junior Isla Hoffelt was the leading scorer with four goals while sophomore Lucca Suib chipped in three. Sophomore Nico Zadoff and sophomore Myla Zawadzki each had a goal.

Grant finished the year 17-2, the only two losses coming to Jesuit with the other in the regular season being a 16-15 final.

State boys volleyball

Central Catholic is the No. 2 seed in the inaugural 6A/5A boys volleyball state tournament after a perfect 19-0 season.

That gave the Rams a bye into the quarterfinals and they will take on No. 7 Liberty at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23 for a spot in the semifinals set for Friday, May 29 at West Salem High School.

David Douglas also earned its way into the postseason, grabbing the No. 13 seed. The Scots fell 3-0 to No. 4 Silverton in round one 25-22, 25-18, 25-18.

Portland Adventist is representing for the local small schools, earning the No. 1 seed in the 4A/3A/2A/1A classification thanks to a 12-2 overall record.

The Cougars draw No. 8 Willamette Valley Christian in the quarterfinals, which is set for 9:30 p.m. Saturday, May 23. Winner there moves on to the semifinals also set for Friday, May 29 at West Salem.

Softball

The Cleveland Warriors are partying like it’s 1994 after they took home the PIL title outright for the first time since that year. Cleveland split the crown in 2001 with Franklin.

The Warriors got a little help from Ida B. Wells, who took out Grant 15-0 on May 18, allowing Cleveland to move into a tie with the Generals, but the Warriors took two out of three in their league series. Grant lost its last two games of the season to remove the record tie anyway.

Cleveland finished the regular season 19-6 overall and 15-3 in league, earning the title and the home playoff game that goes with it. McDaniel ended up in second and Grant took third, both sitting at 13-5 in league and they’ll both be in the postseason.

In the Mt. Hood Conference, Central Catholic battled its way to third place and the last automatic bid to state that comes with it.

The state tournament field was revealed Thursday night, and Cleveland moved up from No. 20 in the OSAA rankings to No. 16 in order to host and the Warriors drew No. 17 Grants Pass.

McDaniel is the No. 25 seed and will be making the long trip south to play No. 8 North Medford. No. 28 Grant will be a little closer to home, traveling to No. 7 West Salem for the first round.

It’s been a minute since a PIL team won a playoff game, the last coming in 2019 when No. 20 Franklin went on the road and upset No. 13 Reynolds with a 5-0 victory. Cleveland last won a playoff game back in 2009 in 5A when it beat Thurston 8-7 in the second round.

Central Catholic was slotted as the No. 22 seed and will play No. 11 Lake Oswego.

All first round games will take place Monday, May 25 with times still to be determined.

Baseball

For the second consecutive year, Grant is your PIL champion thanks to a 13-1 mark in league play and a 21-6 overall record.

The Generals swept Wells and took out Lakeridge to close the regular season, earning the league crown and a guaranteed home playoff game.

Lincoln ended up in second place at 11-3 in league play while Cleveland and Wells tied for third both sitting at 10-4 and having split their regular season series.

In the Mt. Hood Conference, Central Catholic fought through the league tournament to finish in third place and guarantee a spot in the postseason after a tumultuous season.

Portland Christian also had a good season down in the 2A/1A classification, taking second place in Special District 1 and winning a league tournament game over Nestucca to earn the league’s second postseason autobid.

Brackets were released for both 6A and 2A/1A on Thursday night and the six local teams mentioned above all made the field.

Grant earned the No. 6 seed and will look to make another run to the title game after making it last year as the No. 9 seed.

The Generals’ first-round opponent will be No. 27 Forest Grove. Projecting out a little bit, Grant with a win would either play No. 11 Sunset in the second round, a rematch of last year’s state title game, or No. 22 Central Catholic, an inner-Portland showdown.

Lincoln is also in the field at No. 15 and will host No. 18 Oregon City in the first round. The winner is likely to play No. 2 Tualatin in the second round.

Cleveland is back in the postseason for the first time since 2018 and is slotted as the No. 24 seed. The Warriors will take on No. 9 Lake Oswego in the first round.

The last 6A squad in the field is Wells at the No. 28 seed. The Guardians will hit I-5 for a trip to Eugene to take on No. 5 Willamette in the first round.

In 2A/1A, Portland Christian landed at No. 15 and will host No. 18 Oakridge in the first round. A win would put the Royals against No. 2 Crosshill Christian in the second round.

All first round games will be Monday, May 25 with times still to be determined.
