Rose City Roundup: Oregon Relays highlights, baseball and softball standouts
Our first Rose City Roundup of the spring season is taking a look at some of the best performances from the last week.
We’re keeping track of all stats this season for baseball and softball teams, and each week we plan to put out some of the best performances.
And over the weekend, the annual Oregon Relays were held down in Eugene at Hayward Field where a crop of Portland athletes put up memorable marks.

Baseball highlights
Cleveland freshman Sean Hausman went 3 for 3 against McNary on March 31 with two doubles, and also threw a complete game with eight strikeouts and only one run allowed in 3-1 win. Hausman followed it up with a 3 for 4 day against Liberty in an 11-6 loss on April 3.
Grant senior Jinki Tomita threw a complete game in a 3-2 win over West Linn on March 31 where he had nine strikeouts and two runs allowed.
Grant senior Elliot Raiton had a home run in that 3-2 win over West Linn and also went 2 for 4 with two runs in a 9-2 win over South Salem on April 1.
Ida B. Wells junior Jude Nolan went 3 for 3 with three RBI in a 14-0 win over Tigard on March 31 at the new Hillsboro Hops stadium, meanwhile junior Jack Burnham pitched four innings and had nine strikeouts with only one hit allowed, no runs.
Lincoln junior Jack Aleskus threw a complete game shutout in a 5-0 win over Tigard on April 2, giving up only five hits and had seven strikeouts with one walk.
McDaniel senior Brady Davis went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI in a 10-4 win over McNary on April 1.
Central Catholic freshman Cole Migaki threw six innings in a 5-1 win over Canby on April 2 where he allowed one run on five hits with 11 Ks and one walk.
Softball highlights
Cleveland senior Jillian Lee threw all 14 innings in a 4-1 win over Grant on April 2 and a 7-5 win over McDaniel on April 3, picking up 13 strikeouts in each matchup for a total of 26 this past week.
Grant’s Margot Kalmanson went 2 for 3 with two RBI and Hazel Heron pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts in a 9-5 win over defending PIL champion Roosevelt on April 3.
Wells senior Sam Stevens went 2 for 3 with two RBI to highlight a strong performance in a 13-3 win over rival Lincoln on April 3. She was also 3 for 5 with two RBI in a 26-13 loss to McDaniel on April 2.
The whole McDaniel lineup had a day in that 26-13 win over Wells. Kaylie Schmitz went 4 for 6 with three RBI, Brylee Scott went 3 for 5 with six RBI and Amira Edwards went 4 for 5 with three RBI while also pitching 4.2 innings.
Oregon Relays highlights
For the third consecutive year, Roosevelt senior Aster Jones swept the two sprinting titles by winning the girls 100 and 200 meter. She ran the 100 in a time of 11.61 seconds and the 200 in 23.38.
Jefferson senior EJ Cozart, the reigning 6A state champion in the boys long jump, took fourth in the event with a top leap of 22 feet, 11.25 inches. That mark was the best of any Oregon competitor. He also took ninth in the open boys 300 hurdles in a time of 40.42 seconds, fourth best time among Oregon competition.
Grant senior Willa Stockton had a great weekend, taking fifth in the girls 100 with a time of 12.11 seconds, and also took seventh in the 200 at 24.87. She also anchored the Generals 4x100 relay team that finished third in a time of 47.73 seconds, a squad that also includes Parker Hetherington, Osa Olsgaard and Rosemary Sheerin.
Sticking with relays, Lincoln broke a meet record in the girls 1600 SMR in a time of 4:03.90, but did take second in the race. The team included Lulu Lehmann, Matilda Hof, Rosie Gross and Ellery Lincoln.
On the boys side of the 1600 SMR, Lincoln took seventh in a time of 3:37.93, fourth among Oregon teams, behind the running of Dede Bishop, Remy Bruyere, Bailey Gross and Maxwell Prince.
The Wells girls took fifth in the 4x400 relay at 4:01.07, second best among Oregon teams. The four runners included Millie Grabenhorst, Kailea Hurd, Zora Li Budd Baker and Samantha Moylan.
Rounding out the relays were the Grant boys who took fourth in the 4x800 relay in a time of 7:59.60. Jack McDaniel, Kael Uyeda, Jasper Bennett and Nicholas Akita made up the squad. The Generals also took second in the 800 SMR in a time of 1:33.87 behind Sit Abdalle, Nick Normington, Silas Wise and Eli Anderson.
Individually, Wise took second in the boys 200 with a time of 21.76 seconds, the top time for an Oregon competitor in the event.
Lincoln junior Kelsey Hill finished in third in the open girls 300 hurdles with a time of 45.66, which was the best time from Oregon runners.
Switching to the distance runners, Lincoln senior Elyse Henriksen had the best showing with a ninth place finish in the girls two-mile championship, crossing at 10:48.04 which was fourth against Oregon runners.
Wells senior Otto Sellers and Lincoln junior Peter James had similar finishes with the former taking 11th in the boys two-mile championship (9:10.04) and the latter crossing in 12th in the boys one-mile championship (4:11.87, a PR).
Jack Denton, a Lincoln junior, took sixth in the open boys one-mile race with a time of 4:19.42.
Out in the field, Lincoln senior Cameron Mirzakhalili got his chance to compete in the hammer throw, an event not a part of the OSAA season. His top toss was 167-04 and put him in sixth for the event, best among Oregon throwers. He also placed seventh in the boys discus with a top mark of 159-06, third best in Oregon.
Cleveland senior Milo Swinth continued his hot start with another PR in the boys shot put, putting up a top throw of 56-0.5 to finish fifth, second among Oregon competitors. He also took eighth in the boys discus at 158-03.
Grant junior Carley Jendritza tied for fifth in the girls high jump at 5-3, Lincoln senior Harlan Novy-Marx tied for sixth on the boys side at 6-4.
Cleveland senior Noah Malmon placed ninth in the boys triple jump at 43-5.25.
