We’re back with the Rose City Roundup this Sunday after a two-week break. My apologies, had some important things to celebrate the past two weekends.

Oct. 11 was my beautiful wife Faviola’s birthday and we spent the day rail-biking in Hood River, followed by a night with family and friends.

Then, Oct. 20 was our anniversary, 12 years if you count from when we first became a thing in 2013 as high schoolers, second if you count it from our wedding on the same day back in 2023.

Sorry for the mushy stuff, but I love Faviola so much and I’m always so happy to celebrate her in the month of October. She deserves the world and I’m trying my best to give it to her.

One more sappy update, this past week, Portland Preps crossed over 200 members. A small but mighty milestone in this now two-month old endeavor.

Thank you so much to you early subscribers, your support has been much appreciated and I hope you’re enjoying the Portland Preps coverage.

My hope with building this following is that we can all learn to celebrate not only our micro-communities around each of your high schools, but celebrate all Portlanders and the success they are seeing in the youth.

This is a great city deserving of praise in many aspects beyond athletics, but I hope my little slice of life here can be a positive light for the city.

Alright, let’s get on with the real news of the week down below!

Soccer league champions crowned

If you read the piece above, you’ll know Lincoln took home the PIL crown in girls volleyball with a perfect 8-0 mark in league play.

In PIL boys soccer, Grant closed the deal with a 1-0 victory over Cleveland and a 4-0 win over Benson this past week to finish a perfect 7-0 in league and a 12-2-1 overall record.

On the girls side of soccer, Lincoln closed the deal as well with a 5-0 win over McDaniel and a 4-0 victory over Franklin, finishing 6-0 in the PIL and 13-1 overall.

Central Catholic also earned a Mt. Hood Conference title in boys soccer with one match still to go. The Rams are 6-0 in the MHC with second-place Barlow at 3-1-2 and out of reach of catching the Rams. They finish the season at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Clackamas.

In the MHC girls standings, Central Catholic got a big 3-1 win over David Douglas to take the inside track for a league crown. The Rams are 5-1 in league play with David Douglas and Barlow tied for second at 4-1-1. Central closes the season at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 against Clackamas at Delta Park while David Douglas ends with a 6:30 p.m. match the same day at home against Barlow.

Soccer rankings freeze on Tuesday, Oct. 28 and the first round will take place later this week on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Cross country championships up next

The end of the regular season is also here for cross country with league championships happening throughout the week.

All 6A squads will be vying for league titles and state championship spots on Wednesday, Oct. 29.

The PIL will return to Lents Park at a time still to be announced. Central Catholic and David Douglas squads will compete at 3 p.m. for the boys and 3:30 p.m. for the girls at Blue Lake Regional Park.

St. Mary’s Academy will run in the Three Rivers League girls meet at 3 p.m. at Clackamas Community College.

In 5A, Parkrose will take on its NWOC competition at 2:30 p.m. for the girls and 3 p.m. for the boys on Thursday, Oct. 30 at Blue Lake Regional Park.

All of Portland’s 3A and under teams will be at the 3A/2A/1A Special District 1 meet Thursday, Oct. 30 at Rainier High School.

The 3A boys race will go at 4:15 p.m. that includes Portland Adventist and Riverdale. The 2A/1A boys race is next at 4:35 p.m. with Columbia Christian and Portland Christian in the running.

Last but not least, the 3A/2A/1A girls race will go off at 4:55 p.m. and includes teams from Columbia Christian, Portland Adventist, Portland Christian and Riverdale.

In 6A, the top two teams at each league meet earn a spot for the whole squad at the state meet automatically. Four additional teams across the whole classification will earn an at-large bid, determined by the At-Large Committee.

Any individual who finishes in the top 14 of a 6A race will also earn a spot at state if their team isn’t one of the ones earning an autobid.

For 5A, each league gets two auto team bids as well, but there are five at-large spots up for grabs. Individuals must finish in the top seven of their league race to earn a bid outside of their team.

For 3A/2A/1A girls, three automatic bids are given to each league with four at-large bids up for grabs. Individuals must finish in the top seven.

3A boys will have two automatic bids and four at-large bids. Individuals have to finish seventh or better. And the same qualifications and bids go for 2A/1A boys.
