Friday Night Lights were moved mostly to Thursday this week with 10 of the 11 local squads playing a day early.

Those games included four more PIL matchups that nearly saw two major upsets, meanwhile the two other favorites cruised in their matchups.

Speaking of cruising, that’s what Central Catholic did to stay atop the Mt. Hood Conference standings.

We’ve got all of that detailed down below on this week’s day-early football roundup.

Ida B. Wells 28, Grant 20

Trailing early in the third quarter, Ida B. Wells was able to take the lead back before the end of the frame and held on for the win over visiting Grant.

After recovering an onside kick to start the game, the Guardians got a TD run from Fletcher Hamman to go up 6-0. The Generals took the 7-6 lead later in the first though when Gage Creasey connected with Sit Abdalle for a 22-yard score.

Kurt Jordan found the end zone right before half for the Guardians to make it 12-7, but Abdalle picked up a blocked punt in the third and ran it back for a score to make it 14-12 Generals.

Jordan was able to find paydirt once more to make it 20-14, and a Ramsey Prentice interception, his second of the night, helped Wells score once more on a Jordan run to make it 28-14 early in the fourth. Grant scored with 19 seconds left on a Creasey to Conor Segel TD pass.

Wells moves to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the PIL while Grant falls to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in league.

The Generals will try to bounce back next week at home against McDaniel with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at Marshall Campus. The Guardians head to SW Portland rival Lincoln with the battle for second in the PIL and the last automatic bid to the postseason possibly on the line in the matchup. Game time is 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at Lincoln.

Roosevelt 28, Jefferson 14

Through a lightning delay and a barrage of penalties, Roosevelt came out with the 28-14 win over rival Jefferson to stay in first in the PIL.

The Democrats were up 14-8 early in the second, but one of two Geovoney Burks rushing TDs on the night for the Roughriders tied the game at 14 going into the break.

TyVelle Hill scored on the opening drive of the second half to put Roosevelt in front 22-14, and Burks’ second score came early in the fourth as the defense swarmed Jefferson.

The Riders improved to 3-3 overall and a 3-0 mark in the PIL. Jefferson is now 1-5 and 1-3 in the PIL.

Up next for Roosevelt is homecoming against Franklin, set for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17. The Demos hit the road for Cleveland’s homecoming game with kickoff set for 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17.

Lincoln 35, McDaniel 6

Lincoln’s Greyson Murff returned the opening kickoff for a TD and the Cardinals never looked back in a 35-6 win over McDaniel.

Blake Timothy recorded two receiving TDs along the way while chipping in an interception on defense. Finn Davies threw those two passing TDs and also rushed for a score while Zan Galton added one on the ground.

Defensively, Leonardo Correani had a forced fumble that was recovered by Devin Prendergast, and the latter also had two sacks on the night.

Lincoln is now 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the PIL while the Mountain Lions’ had their two-game win streak snapped and are 2-4 overall, 1-2 in the PIL.

McDaniel will try to get back in the win column against Grant next week with the game set for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at Marshall Campus. Meanwhile Lincoln has a SW Portland showdown with Wells that could be for second place and the final autobid to the postseason. That game is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at Lincoln.

Franklin 48, Cleveland 6

Rashawn Hunter-Barber had an 87-yard TD run to open the scoring for Franklin and the Lightning were off to the races in the 48-6 win over Cleveland.

Central Catholic 57, Reynolds 0

It was all Central Catholic inside Hillsboro Stadium in the 57-0 blanking of Reynolds.

Robbie Long returned at QB and threw four TD passes, one each to Jamear Shambry, George VanSandt, KK Sombe and Luddy Barron. On the ground, Sombe added another score and Summitt Grant rushed in a TD as well.

Special teams got in on the fun too with Cole Thomas and Tayton Promma-Harris both scoring on kickoff returns.

The Rams are now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mt. Hood Conference with another home game on the way. They host Barlow next at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at Hillsboro Stadium.

Gresham 20, Parkrose 0

Parkrose couldn’t find an answer on offense as it fell to Gresham 20-0 on Thursday.

Up 12-0 early in the fourth, the Gophers scored and hit the 2-point conversion to make it 20-0. And on the ensuing kickoff, they recovered an onside kick with 10:30 left in the game to help block any potential Broncos comeback.

Parkrose falls to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in 5A Special District 1 play. Up next is a home game against La Salle Prep set to start at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17.
